Disabled voices ignored as key proposals to cut benefits are left out of the Government Consultation

It’s time for inclusion! Sign our open letter now:

Dear Prime Minister,

We, the undersigned express our strong agreement with the objections to the Pathways to Work: Reforming Benefits and Support to Get Britain Working Green Paper outlined in the Campaign for Disability Justice consultation response.

The Green Paper's main title suggests an aim to support Disabled people in returning to work. However, we share the concern that its proposals fail to explain realistic steps to achieve this in a way that truly benefits Disabled people. In fact, it appears the focus is on the threat of removal or reduction of financial security for Disabled people, particularly with the emphasis on restricting Personal Independence Payment (PIP), which is fundamentally separate from initiatives designed to facilitate employment.

Furthermore, we are deeply troubled that the proposals with the most significant negative impact on Disabled people are not subject to proper consultation. This lack of engagement is unacceptable and undermines any claim that these changes are being made in the best interests of Disabled people.

In the meantime, we are unwavering in our belief that the Government has a responsibility to work closely and collaboratively with Disabled people and their organisations to implement urgent and thorough reviews of:

  • the Work Capability Assessment
  • PIP assessment process
  • Safeguarding
  • the role of employers and employment support provision
  • Access to Work.

Safeguarding, moreover, is by definition urgent and swift action, in consultation with key stakeholders, is needed in advance of a wider review.

It is also important that Government should fund and collaboratively develop a national strategy to ensure that Disabled people have access to local independent advice services for social security and related matters.

Thank you for your time and consideration of these serious concerns. We look forward to your response and a commitment to a more inclusive and supportive approach for Disabled people in our society.

Yours sincerely,

Campaign for Disability Justice
