A Disabled community
Our relationships with loved ones, family, friends, or neighbours matter to most of us, we all want to feel understood and valued.
Disabled people can feel frozen out of that, especially if our condition makes it hard for us to go out. It can leave us feeling like the only person living life with our impairment.
But Disabled people are never alone. One in four of people in the UK lives with a condition that means they're disabled. By the time we reach state pension age, almost half of us will be.
There are Disabled people in every street, village, town, workplace and school.
Joining the Disabled community can help us feel more connected.
Who is Disabled?
There’s legal definitions about who is Disabled, but people don’t always realise their experience ‘counts’. It could be…
- Your colleague whose arthritis is dreadful in winter
- A neighbour with a birthmark across her face
- A friend in the pub who gets breathless because of heart disease
- Your Dad, who turns up the telly, refuses a hearing aid, and would never consider himself deaf
They are all Disabled.
Disabled just means the world hasn’t been built to include the things we need to live our lives, and manage any symptoms of our condition.
Joining the Disabled Community
Recognising that we, or the people we love, are Disabled, can feel like a huge step. But joining the disabled community can give us
- Chance to learn from people with similar experiences to us
- Access to support
- Organisations who are experts in our condition/s
- Friendships with people who understand
- Chance to speak out and make things better for all disabled people
As the Campaign for Disability Justice grows, we hope to be a place where all Disabled people, and anyone who cares about Disabled people, can connect, and feel a sense of togetherness.
Help people find our Disabled community
If you are reading this, you have probably found the disability rights movement. We’re asking for your help to make sure more Disabled people and their loved ones, allies and supporters, can join the community.
This week, could you ask one person to join up and support Disability justice?
Just ask them to sign up for occasional updates, and exciting opportunities to get involved and shape our work coming soon.
Are you running an event for Disabled people and campaigners?
If you’re running a campaign, event, conference, party or opportunity for Disabled people, then we’d love to connect.
We can share your request with over 2500 Disabled people and allies. Just send the details to [email protected]
