Disability Pride – you did it!
Happy Disability Pride month!
Each July, Disability Pride month celebrates Disabled people creating a world where more people’s accessibility requirements are included, where everyone is accepted for who they are.
That world is coming, bit by bit, because over the last 40 years Disabled people and organisations have worked to make things more accessible.
Thanks to them, more people can now live easily and independently:
-
Trains and buses have announcements to tell us where we are
-
Hospitals and doctors’ surgeries are easier to get around
-
More people understand mental health
-
We’re all protected by legislation that says everyone is equal
As a member of the Campaign for Disability Justice, you’re helping to create a world where Disabled people can thrive. Here are just a few things Campaign for Disability Justice members have achieved so far:
-
When the government tried to remove essential support from Disabled people nearly 3000 people wrote to the Prime Minister with us, telling him to stop. We hand delivered your letter to Downing Street.
-
340 Campaign members contacted their MP to tell them that the cuts were unacceptable. Your words educated MPs, and more of them refused to back cuts to Disabled people’s support.
-
300+ Disabled people gave their opinions and experiences of job coaches in GP surgeries to be heard by a government committee, telling them what needs to change. Read a transcript of our evidence.
-
70 Disabled people told our MPs why work and workplaces must be flexible.
-
Your voice has been heard at meetings with MPs, all-party parliamentary groups, workshops, and consultation evidence to the government.
-
Over 2500 people joined the Campaign for Disability Justice, and showed they believe that everyone should have security, opportunities and respect.
There’s more to do, and challenges ahead, but the Disabled community is proud, and ready to keep going and create a more equal world.
