Responding to the interim Timms report
Earlier today, The Timms review released its interim report about the future of Personal Independence Payment – PIP.
PIP should offer independence, something most of us cherish. For many Disabled people it helps cover the extra costs of everyday freedoms like travelling independently, preparing meals or meeting higher energy bills, including from charging mobility aids. PIP should give Disabled people a more equal chance to participate in everyday life.
But for many Disabled people the system is not working as it should.
Over the last few years, rising living costs and years of economic pressure have left more Disabled people trapped in poverty. And too many people struggle to access the support they need.
The interim report, part of the Governments current review of PIP, acknowledges many of the problems Disabled people have been raising for years. However, the real test will be whether the final recommendations, due later this year, will lead to meaningful change that strengthens security, independence and opportunity for Disabled people.
Disabled people must be treated with respect and be included in designing the policies that affect their lives. Any changes must protect people’s security and independence. Support for the extra costs of being Disabled must remain available, whether someone is in work or not.
We’ll continue to keep a close eye on developments and will ensure your voices and experiences shared with us through the Campaign are heard. We want to help create a better system that works better for everyone.
So, while we welcome the acknowledgement of some of the challenges captured in the report, we remain cautious as we wait the final recommendations.
